HP JetDirect Print Servers - How

to Print from Microsoft (R)

Windows for Workgroups and

MS-DOS (R)

QUESTION: How do I print from DOS to an

HP JetDirect device when using the HP Network

Port Monitor Utility for Microsoft Windows for

Workgroups?

ANSWER: HP does not support printing from

DOS when using the HP Network Port Monitor

Utility and a HP JetDirect device. The HP

Network Port Monitor Utility is a Windows for

Workgroups network printing solution. Its

function is to direct print jobs generated by

Windows applications to a printer or plotter

using an HP JetDirect card. It does not have the

ability to direct DOS print jobs to an HP

JetDirect card.

After the printer is set up in the normal

Client Server Mode, share the printer on

the network through the Print Manager.

At the DOS prompt (with Windows for

Workgroups still running), use the

NET.EXE program found in the Windows

directory to associate an available LPT

port to the shared queue.

In this workaround, you are sending the

print job from one PC and spooling it on

the shared PC.

NOTE: The workaround provided for you

in this document is "as is." If questions or

problems arise with this workaround,

please contact Microsoft.

Follow the steps below to direct DOS print

jobs to a Windows for Workgroups

configured HP JetDirect card

1. Set up the printer with the HP JetDirect

card in the normal Client-Server mode,

following the instructions in the Windows

for Workgroups section of the HP JetDirect

Configuration Guide.

2. Share the printer on the network through

Windows Print Manager. This is a required

step to set up an HP JetDirect card in the

Client-Server mode. To do this:

a. Select the queue in Print Manager.

b. Select the Printer menu.

c. Select Share Printer As.

3. At the DOS prompt (with Windows for

Workgroups still running), use the

NET.EXE program found in the Windows

directory to associate an available LPT

port to the shared queue:

a. Start a DOS session.

b. Run the program

C:\WINDOWS\NET.EXE.

c. Press ALT+S to display available

printer resources.

d. Press ALT+B to browse for the name of

the computer selected in step 2 above.

Select the computer's name and wait for the

name of the shared printer to appear in the

"shared printer queue" box. Press ENTER

to return to the NET.EXE opening screen.

e. Press ALT+T and then type 1. Press

ENTER.

f. Press ESC to exit from NET.EXE.

NOTE: In the details of step 3, the PC that

is the server is not able to connect to an

LPT port using the NET.EXE program.

Error message 2106: "This operation

cannot be performed on your own

computer" will appear. Connection to all

other PCs should not be a problem.
