Troubleshooting DOS printing through W95:

 

1. Check the following printer settings:

 

a. Choose Start, Settings,and Printers.

 

b. Make sure there are no duplicate icons for the HPDeskJet 720C

Series such as HP DeskJet 720C Series copy 2. If more than one

icon for the printer exists, remove all the duplicates by

highlighting the extra icon and choosing File and Delete.

 

c. The HP DeskJet 720C Series icon must not be renamed in the

Printers window. If the icon has been renamed, change the name

back to "HP DeskJet 720C Series". To do this, highlight the icon

for the printer, select File, and Rename. Then, type the correct

name of the printer and press ENTER.

 

d. Highlight the HP DeskJet 720C Series icon. Choose File and

look for a check next to Set As Default. If there is not a check,

highlight the Set As Default line and click once. If the check is

already there, cancel the File menu byclicking once on any blank

space. The File menu will disappear.

 

e.Highlight the HP DeskJet 720C Series icon. Choose File andmake

sure there is not a check next to Pause Printing. If there is

acheck, highlight the Pause Printing line and click once. If the

checkis already there, cancel the File menu by clicking once on

any blankspace. The File menu will disappear.

 

f. Choose File and Properties. Select the Details tab. Make sure

the correct port andprinter driver are selected.

 

g. In the Properties window, choose Port Settings under the

Details tab. Ensure that "Spool MS-DOSprint jobs" is selected and

"Check Port State Before Printing" isnot selected. Choose OK.

 

h. Under the Details tab of the Properties window, choose OK.

 

2. If the DOS application will not print when accessed from

theapplication's icon, access the application through the

MS-DOSprompt. To do this, follow the steps below:

 

a. Choose Start, Programs, and select the MS-DOS Prompt.

 

b. At the C:\WINDOWS prompt, type CD\ and press ENTER.

 

c. At the C:\ prompt, type the path to the DOS application and

press ENTER. d.Print from the DOS application again. e. If unable

to print, proceedwith the steps below.

 

3. Print a directory from the DOS shell to establish

printerfunctionality in DOS and to verify that the problem is not

applicationspecific. To do this, follow the steps below:

 

a. Choose Start,Programs, and select the MS-DOS Prompt.

 

b. At theC:\WINDOWS prompt, type CD\ and press ENTER.

 

c. At the C:\prompt, type DIR>LPT1 and press ENTER. If the

printer isconnected to another port such as LPT2, replace LPT1

with LPT2in the command above.

 

d. Press the printer's Resume button tocomplete the directory

print.

 

e. If the directory prints, print from theDOS application again.

If the directory does not print, continue withthe steps below.

NOTE: Within the DOS application, select an HPDeskJet printer

driver such as an HP DeskJet 660C, 550C or 500printer. If an HP

DeskJet printer selection is not available in theDOS application,

an HP LaserJet or an HP LaserJet II printerselection may work. If

these selections are not available contact theDOS application

vendor for an appropriate driver.

 

4. Run the DOS Based-Program in a Partial Window

 

a. Right clickthe Start button and choose Open.

 

b. Open the Programs folder.

 

c.Right click the MS-DOS Prompt and select Properties.

 

d. Choose the Screen tab.

 

e. Change the Usage option to "Window", instead of "Full-screen"

and choose OK.

 

f. Close the Start Menu window.

 

g. Open the MS-DOS Prompt and run the DOS based program.

 

h. Try printing again. If unsuccessful, proceed to step 5.

NOTE:Pressing Alt + ENTER will toggle the DOS program from a

fullscreen to a window or window to a full screen and can be used

inplace of the procedures listed above.

 

5. At the C:\ prompt, type MODE LPT1:,,P and press ENTER. If

theprinter is connected to another port such as LPT2, replace

LPT1with LPT2 in the command above. Print the DOS directory

again. Ifthe directory prints, print from the DOS application

again. If thedirectory does not print, continue with the steps

below.

 

6. Delete and reinstall the printer driver. Print the DOS

directoryagain. If the directory prints, print from the DOS

application again. Ifthe directory does not print, continue with

the steps below.

 

7. Pause the Windows 95 print spooler to see if the spooler

isactually receiving the DOS print job. To do this, follow the

stepsbelow:

 

a. Choose Start, Settings, and Printers.

 

b. Highlight the HPDeskJet 720C Series icon. Select File and

Pause Printing.

 

c. Printa DOS directory again by following the instructions in

step 3 above.

 

d. When the DOS prompt returns, type EXIT and press ENTER.

 

e.In the Printers window, double click the HP DeskJet 720C

Seriesicon to view the print spooler. If a print job appears,

select Printerand Pause Printing. The print job should begin

printing at theprinter. Print from the DOS application again. If

the print job doesnot appear in the print spooler, contact the

computermanufacturer's technical support or Windows 95 technical

supportand make sure the Windows 95 print spooler is set up to

spoolDOS print jobs. Also, verify that the LPT.vxd file in

Windows 95 isthe latest version.

 

8. Delete any temporary files from the computer's hard

drive.NOTE: Deleting temporary files should be done carefully so

thatnecessary files are not deleted. All temporary files use

theextension .TMP. If unsure about the proper procedures

foridentifying, locating, or selecting temporary files for

deletion,contact the computer manufacturer's technical support or

Windows95 technical support for assistance.

 

a. At the Windows 95 maindesktop, select Start, Find, and Files

or Folders.

 

b. On the Namedline, type *.tmp and on the Look In line, type

C:\. Make sure IncludeSubfolders is selected. Choose Find Now.

 

c. Highlight the files inthe Search Results list by choosing Edit

and Select All.

 

d. Select File and Delete. (Windows will not allow necessary

Windows filesto be deleted.)

 

e. Print the DOS directory again. If the directoryprints, print

from the DOS application again. If the directory doesnot print,

continue with the steps below.

 

9. Run the Windows 95 ScanDisk and Disk Defragmenter

utilities.(Refer to the Windows Help files, contact the

computermanufacturer's technical support, or contact Windows 95

technicalsupport for information on these utilities.) Print the

DOS directoryagain. If the directory prints, print from the DOS

application again. Ifthe directory does not print, continue with

the steps below.

 

10. If possible, install the printer driver software on another

computer and print from a DOS application or print a DOS

directory. NOTE: If printing problems continue, contact the

HPCustomer Care Center listed in the printer's User's Guide
