Major Class Code Ideas

Below is a sample major class code listing. As always, the
organization of your own listing should reflect the relative
importance of the various inventory types in your store and also the
amount of detail you want in inventory and sales reports. A greater
number of major class codes yields more specific reports but
requires more effort in categorizing merchandise when it is entered
into the computer.
You can have up to 999 major class codes, but that would be too many
for most stores to keep track of. The sample below represents a
quite detailed listing Ä you may prefer a simpler one. Be careful
not to make the listing too simple though. For a manual system 8
categories might have seemed enough but for an organized
computerized system 50 major codes should be considered the low-end
and 150 might be on the high end.
To make the classes easier to remember, you can also assign a
mnemonic to each major class code number, such as GWR for Gents'
Wedding Rings. The number is always required with the letters
optional; you could use letters on all or just a few of your major
codes.
Always try to leave gaps between major class codes to allow for
future expansion.
Note that major codes do NOT usually reflect the vendor or brand.
Each inventory item entered also is assigned a vendor and brand code for that.
In certain cases you may partly assign major codes by vendor. For example,
If a certain specialty designer is usually collected by customers then the
fact that the item is a ring or bracelets may be of less significance than
the designer. E.g. in that case you might have 750 Joe's Enamel Broach,
755 Joe's Enamel rings, 760 Joe's Enamel Bracelets. (instead of grouping
them with the rings, braclets and broaches as would be normal.)

Minor Class Codes
Below are some sample minor class codes. Note that there may be some
redundancy between the major and minor class codes. For example. You
may have a specific earring category for 14 Karat gold earrings Ä
so why have a minor class code for 14 Karat Gold? The reason is so
that you could run a sales or inventory report for all the 14 Karat
gold items, regardless of whether they are rings, bracelets, watches
or earrings. You can have up to 1000 minor class codes, but that is
probably far too many for most stores. The minor class codes do NOT
have the option for an equivalent in alphabetical characters.
