Imaging Hardware Requirements 

The Jewelry Shopkeeper can display color images of your jewelry on your computer monitor. The pictures can also be printed on appraisals using an HP LaserJet.

Note: You must store the images on your hard disk drive using imaging equipment and software. Compulink does not sell or service any of this equipment. You may need some help from the dealer or consultant from whom you purchase this imaging equipment and software. You may need other software to use the pictures to make catalog sheets.

 

What file formats are supported?

The Jewelry Shopkeeper supports all popular raster image file formats including: PCX, TIF (including group 3&4), GIF, TGA, DCX and BMP in resolution up to 640 ´ 480 with up to 256 colors.

 

How are pictures and documents input for the Jewelry Shopkeeper?

    What image capture boards work best?

    Popular image capture cards include: TARGA+, Bravado from TrueVision, Illuminator from Matrox and ComputerEyes RT from Digital Vision.

     

    How big a hard disk is required?

    A reasonable quality picture (16 colors) is good enough for identification purposes and takes about 0.035MB of disk space. A good (256 colors — not photographic) quality picture takes about 0.175MB. Multiply the size by the number of pictures you want for an estimate of total disk usage.

     

    What type of video camera is recommended?

    The quality of the image produced from worst to best: Home camcorder (composite), digital still camera, Hi-8 or SVHS camcorder, industrial RGB video camera.

     

    What is a digital still camera?

    Instead of using film, still video cameras store their images on a 2² disk or memory inside the camera. The image from a still video camera is acquired by the computer via an image capture card. Digital still cameras start at about $600 although high quality (e.g. Nikon) models cost thousands.

     

    What type of scanners are recommended?

    Any scanner can be used to acquire image files. The Hewlett Packard ScanJet 4c is a popular model.
