Compulink does not sell any computer hardware, however, we can
offer the below guidelines as to what you will need. Because each
store is different, we suggest you consult with a local computer
dealer to determine your particular needs.
The Jewelry Shopkeeper software will work on any PC running
Windows. So, even if you have an old Pentium computer with 32MB
of RAM and 2GB disk space it is enough to get going with.
However, if you do not have a computer, or you plan on buying a
new one, we would recommend a more up-to-date computer such as
one with the following specifications: The "processor" should be
a Pentium 4; The hard drive should be 30GB or
larger, and the RAM should be 512MB or more. You can use either a
flat (LCD) monitor or a regular (CRT) monitor. Windows 98se is
the simplest and fasted version of Windows, but it's usually difficult
to get that these days. However Shop-Pro has been well tested with
Window XP professional (XP Home is not preferred but of course can work).
You can expect a price range of $500 to $1,600 for a computer.
Before choosing a printer for Shop-Pro be sure to consult a more
extensive sheet of printer suggestions, but here is a summary.
To print reports, checks, receipts, appraisals,
statements, etc., we recommend a Hewlett Packard Laser printer
like the HP 2300 but note that those printers do NOT print price tags.
To print tags with barcodes, you need a special printer such as
the Datamax E4203 or Citizen CLP-6002. Barcoding can save a lot
of time on the physical inventory and produced more professional
and durable price tags. You can also print standard (non-barcode)
price tags with a Panasonic or Epson dot-matrix printer
For best customer support from Compulink, we highly recommend you
have an internet e-mail account and a fax machine.
A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) is recommended for each
computer. This is a battery and surge protector in one which
keeps your computer running in power outages or disturbances. A
small $90 one is usually sufficient to keep your computer up for
10 minutes or so but check with the seller on UPS capacity
requirements.
If you plan on point-of-sale use you probably need a network of
computers (one or more for sales registers, one or more for
accounting or inventory processing.) For point-of-sale, you will
want fast computers, to speed the customer's transactions. You
can use the Windows 98/ME/XP network features for a small network of
2 to 4 stations and Windows XP for larger networks. (Note that
registers require actual computers, not just screens.)
