Windows 7 Information
Both the Windows and DOS versions of Jewelry Shopkeeper have been
successfully tested under the Windows 7 platform since early 2009.
Note that there are 32-bit versions of Windows 7 and 64-bit versions.
All new computers can run either version of Windows 7.
All older / existing computers should run Windows XP Pro.
Visual Jewelry Shopkeeper (for Windows) is fully compatible with both 32-bit
and 64-bit Windows 7 so if you are a new Visual Jewelry Shopkeeper user
you can choose either 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7.
JS-Classic (Jewelry Shopkeeper DOS Version 10) and earlier versions are
compatible only with 32-bit versions of Windows.
If you currently run Shopkeeper for DOS you will need 32-bit Windows 7. If you inadvertently order a new
computer that arrives with 64-bit Windows 7, ask the computer vendor how you can have it reconfigured
with 32-bit Windows 7. Note that 64-bit Windows 7 Professional allows you to install “XP Mode” which will
run JS-Classic. However, in most cases you’ll find it easier overall to just switch to 32-bit Windows 7.
If you have previously used Shopkeeper for DOS and now have VJS you will likely want the option, for a
period of time, to occasionaly access the JS-Classic interface. Thus new computers should have 32-bit
Windows 7 installed. If you have several computers, and a new computer is shipped to you with 64-bit
Windows 7 you might leave it as-is provided you have other computers on the network running 32-bit
Windows XP or Windows 7.
There are essentially no known performance benefits of 64-bit Windows at this time. But in the future there
will likely be some benefits.
