Type Z to select the Zebra printer. (under direction from Compulink, you may select D for the Datamax/Allegro family of printers)

Choose L for the Large letters. For the resolution choose 8 because most Zebra printers are 8 dot-per-millimeter printers. One exception is the Z-95 model which prints at 6dpm.

For the time delay, choose 0 unless you have a serial printer. If you have a serial printer and the printer fails to print all the tags you request, you may have to enter a delay here to slow the tag printing down. If needed, start at about 5 units of delay and increase if necessary.

Next, the following prompt appears:

             Edit Thermal Tag Layout 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9  <Esc>=Quit

You can define up to nine different layouts of tag. Each layout can print a different combination of information or different positions. This allows you to print on many different styles and sizes of price tag. You can print on virtually any size of price tag that will fit the Zebra printer — even new tags that become available and which don’t yet exist.

1-across price tags only require one layout. 2-across price tags (such as ZU-304) require two layouts; one for the left tag and one for the right tag.

When the Jewelry Shopkeeper is shipped, only layouts 1, 3 & 4 are pre-defined — the rest you can use as you like. Layout 1 defaults to the standard ring tag (style ZU102). Layout 3 and 4 are used together for the standard string tag (style ZU304).

When you select a layout to edit, the following layout screen appears.

This screen lists all the possible items you can print on a price tag. Note that the most commonly used items are already selected.

The numbers to the left of each item are the co-ordinates, or position where that item will print. The first number is how far across from the left edge of the tag the item will print, and the second number is how far down from the top edge of the tag the item will print. All numbers are measured from the top left corner of the tag and the numbers are measured in dots. Since most Zebras print at 8 dots per millimeter, these units are eighths of millimeters. For example, the retail price coordinates of (20, 85) means the price will print 20 dots across from the left edge of the tag and 85 dots down from the top of the tag. In millimeters, this is about 2.5mm across and 10mm down. In inches this is about 3/32 across and 13/32 down.

Notes about measurements: The printer itself determines where the top edge of the tag starts and the exact position of the left edge may vary depending on how you load the tags. Therefore, it is very likely that you may have to adjust the coordinates to position the tags just right for your printer.

In order for the printer to “see” where the top of the tag is, it has a sensor mounted near where the tags exit the printer. Sometimes, you have to adjust the position of the sensor so it can accurately see the tag. This is especially true of the dumbbell or ring tags because of their odd shape. For dumbbell tags, you may have to physically position the sensor to be in the middle of one of the fat lobs of the tag — either lobe would work. You can position the sensor with your fingers. In case of difficulties, call Zebra (847) 913-2259 press 2,1.

Whenever you load a different style of tag, you may have to use the printer’s Calibrate feature to reset the printer’s sensor. See the printer manual for instructions or see if there is a Calibrate button on the control panel on the front of the printer.

The description usually fits on just two lines, so the entries for Description Line 3 and 4 are usually blank. Only if you choose a large enough font would the description spill onto three lines. If you do choose a large font, you also have to decrease the number next to the Length of Description lines because you may not be able to fit 14 characters on a single line.

You can change the font by entering a code in the Overall Font code box. Separately you can change the font for the price and the message. For example, you might want to increase the size of the price and decrease the size of the message. Press the <PageUp> key to see some options for the font code or see your Zebra manual.

The Stone detail options only print for loose stones items where you have added the extra loose stone detail screen.

Below are some sample coordinates for layouts 3 & 4 for tag style ZU304.

The above instructions explain how to setup the Jewelry Shopkeeper to print the correct layout for your tags. After your have experimented and adjusted the coordinates and the printer, you do not have to do these steps again unless you want to adjust the tags or if you want to try printing on some new tags.

On a daily basis when you print tags, you select the desired tags as usual. (e.g. by date or by invoice number or by purchase order). Just before the tags are printed, you will be prompted to choose the number of the layout you want to print — e.g. 1 through 9.

     Make sure the printer is on. 1 Tag have been selected.

     Which Tag Layout should be used: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Double  <Esc>=Quit

However, if you are printing a 2-across tag, instead of choosing a number from 1 to 9, instead choose the DOUBLE option. Then you can pick a combination left-right tag such as 1&2 or 3&4 or 5&6 or 7&8. Note that you cannot pick other combinations such as 2&3 nor 1&8.
