FREEZING

 

           IF YOUR COMPUTER IS FROZEN NOW, SEE IF THESE HELP

           (For General Freezing Issues, See Below)

 

1) Press Page Up, Page Down, Up Arrow, Down Arrow each once only.

 

2) Tap quickly on each of the following keys repeatedly

(at least 7 quick repetitive taps per key!)

 

After each key sequence see if the program has un-stuck.

 

ESC, Space Bar, Enter, Home, End, CTRL, ALT

 

3) Tap repeatedly while alternating left and right between the

following keys:

 

After each key sequence see if the program has un-stuck.

 

Right Shift, Left Shift (quickly) and repeat about 7 times

 

If you have 2 CTRL keys repeat the process

 

If you have 2 ALT keys, repeat the process

 

3) Disconnect and reconnect the keyboard cable from/to the computr.

 

4) Press NUM LOCK key. If the NUM LOCK LIGHT on your keyboard is

responding:

 

   A) If NUM LOCK LIGHT DOES NOT RESPOND: You'll have to POWER

   OFF the computer and re-boot it. (usually this means the

   keyboard signal is no longer reaching the computer)

 

   B) IF NUM LOCK LIGHT RESPOND: Press CTRL + ALT + DEL

 

        1) If you're on a WINDOWS95/98 computer this will bring

        up a "Close Program" box. Write down all the programs

        that are in the box. If one of the programs says "Not

        Responding" make a notation so you can tell Compulink

        when you talk to them!

 

        Click the Shopkeeper/Pro and click End Task. If you get

        the message: "Windows cannot shut down this program

        automatically... Do you wish to terminate this

        program...?" Click Yes.

 

5) Go back into Shopkeeper/Pro and RUN A CLEANUP (from Main menu,

choose 8,7 and type CLEANUP). This is a VERY important step!

 

If you're unable to get into the Shoppro because and "ERROR 15"

is stopping you, go into the Shopkeeper (regular version) and

try a cleanup from there. (Check Yes for More File Verification)

Now check your work from the current day to make sure all

information is intact. If its NOT correct then you should MUST

restore the previous days backup!

 

 

        WINDOWS 95/98 THINGS TO CHECK IN GENERAL FOR FREEZING

 

1) Run a cleanup every morning.

 

2) Anywhere on the Desktop (where all the icons are) move your

mouse button to a spot where the is NO icon and press the RIGHT

mouse button and click Properties.  (Alternatively choose Start,

Settings, Control Panel and double click Display).

 

Choose the Screen Saver tab. Check to make sure that the Screen

Saver says: (None)

 

Choose Start, Shut-Down and Re-start.

 

3)  THIS IS HOW YOU CHECK IF ALL YOUR DEVICES ARE WORKING PROPERLY!

Choose Start, Settings, Control Panel and double click System.

Click the Device Manager tab. Scan down the list and see if there

are any devices (ie: Ports or Mouse or Modem with either an

Yellow Exclamation or a Red Interational "NO" sign showing. Also look

to see if an icon called "OTHER DEVICE" with question mark is at the

bottom of the list. Any one of these conditions can easily result in

freezing the computer at random times. If there is a problem you should

contact your computer hardware professional.

 

 

4) If you have a network, choose Start, Settings, Control Panel

and double click Network. (alternatively- RIGHT click the Network

Neighborhood and choose Properties off the resulting list)

 

   Under the configuration tab there should be a short list of

   the following:

 

   -One Client such as  Client for Microsft Netorks or Novell

   Intranetware Client

 

   -One Network adapter

 

   -One or two protocols such as NetBEUI or IPX/SPX or both. If

   there are too many protocols setup this can lead to computer

   problems

 

   File and printer sharing for Microsoft networks

 

5) At the WIN95/98 Desktop of each workstation, one at a time:

       a) Place the mouse pointer on top of the SHOP-PRO icon

       b) Right click the icon.

       c) Click (with the left mouse) Properties.

       d) Click Memory tab

       e) Verify that the following are selected:

 

               Conventional memory Total: Auto

 

               Initial Environment: Auto

 

               Protected is checked

              Expanded (EMS) Memory : None

              (this option may not appear on all computers.)

 

               Extended (XMS) Memory Total: Auto

 

               Uses HMA: is checked

 

               MS-DOS protected mode Total: Auto

 

6) WINDOWS 98 ONLY

Choose Start->Run. Type in: MSCONFIG and press OK.

Choose the Startup Tab. UNCHECK ALL BOXES except SYSTRAY.

 

7) Some inkjet printers are not recommended with Shopkeeper/Pro.

'HOST BASED'inkjet printers are for Windows printing ONLY.

 

The following Hewlett Packard models are NOT recommended:

HP Deskjet 820, 720, 722, 1000x

 

 

8) Turn off any power saving features your computer may have. These

features are available on all laptop computers and some new office

computers. Some power savings features are controlled via the CMOS

settings. Others are controlled from Windows. You will have to ask

your computer dealer how to check or turn off power saving.

IF NONE OF THOSE HELP...

 

You may want to reinstall the last update you received from compulink

 

If you don't have any updates, then you may consider reinstalling the

program from scratch and restoring a data backup.

 

You may need to reformat your hard drive and reinstall Windows and any

software from scratch, and restore your data.

 

You may want some assistance from a computer tech on the above and

you certainly want to make sure you have at least a few data backup

sets before doing any updating or reinstalling.
